Heating and cooling in Licking County is not one-size-fits-all. The century-old homes around downtown Newark and the village of Granville have chimneys, basements and ductwork that were never designed for modern equipment. Pataskala and Johnstown subdivisions have builder-grade systems reaching the end of their lives on the same schedule. Out past Utica and down around Buckeye Lake, homes run on propane or all-electric heat. We know what to look for in each.
The most common no-heat call we get on the first cold night of the year is not a dead furnace. It is a flame sensor that built up a coating all summer, so the furnace lights, runs a few seconds and shuts off. It is a quick fix, and it is exactly the kind of thing a fall tune-up catches before it strands you.

- You get the price first. No repair starts until you approve it.
- Repair when repair makes sense. We do not push new equipment on a system that needs a part.
- New systems sized with a load calculation, not copied from the old label.
- Every furnace visit includes a carbon monoxide check.

A lot of the furnaces we replace in Licking County were oversized from day one. The original installer copied the old unit, the homeowners added insulation and windows over the years, and the furnace ended up blasting heat for three minutes and shutting off. A correctly sized furnace runs longer, quieter cycles and the whole house evens out.
Heating season is here. Is your furnace ready?
Book a fall tune-up now, or call 24/7 if you already have no heat.
Getting ready for an Ohio winter
Most furnace failures happen on the first night it truly has to work. Parts that were already worn in October, like an igniter with a hairline crack, a weak capacitor or a half-clogged condensate drain, give out when the temperature drops. A few things are worth doing now:
- Change the furnace filter, and write the size on the furnace so you never have to guess.
- Run the heat for a few minutes on a cool evening. A little burning-dust smell the first time is normal.
- Check that your carbon monoxide alarms work, one on every level of the house.
- Make sure the white PVC vent pipes outside are clear of leaves, nests and, later, snow drifts.
- Schedule a furnace tune-up if it has been more than a year.
If your furnace is already acting up, start with our furnace troubleshooting guide. If it is getting old and repairs are adding up, read repair or replace and check typical prices in our cost guide. Considering something new? See furnace replacement and heat pumps.
