Why a tune-up is worth it
Most of the parts that fail on the first cold night of the year were already on their way out in October. A flame sensor with residue on it, an igniter with a hairline crack, a weak blower capacitor, a condensate trap half full of sludge. None of these stop a furnace in mild weather. All of them can stop it the night it has to run hard.
A tune-up is where we find those parts, while it is still cheap and easy to replace them on your schedule instead of ours.
We see the same pattern every fall. A furnace that nobody has touched in years gets a tune-up, and the igniter reads fine but shows the white hairline crack that means it has maybe a few dozen starts left. Replacing it in October is a small line item. Replacing it after it fails on a Saturday night in January is an emergency call.
What a furnace tune-up includes
- Inspect and clean the burners and flame sensor
- Test the igniter and check it for cracks
- Check gas pressure and the flame pattern
- Inspect the heat exchanger for cracks and corrosion
- Test for carbon monoxide at the furnace and supply registers
- Verify venting and draft, and check PVC vent terminations for blockage
- Clean and flush the condensate trap and drain on high-efficiency furnaces
- Test the blower motor and capacitor, and measure temperature rise
- Check the safety limits, pressure switches and thermostat operation
- Replace or recommend the right filter

The weeks before the first hard freeze are the easiest time to get on our schedule.
What an AC tune-up includes
- Clean the outdoor condenser coil and straighten fins
- Test the capacitor and contactor
- Measure refrigerant pressures and temperatures
- Inspect the indoor coil and clear the condensate drain
- Check electrical connections and amperage draw
- Verify airflow and the temperature drop across the coil
Heat pumps get both checklists, since they work year-round.
When to schedule
Schedule furnace tune-ups in September or October, before the first hard frost. Schedule AC tune-ups in April or May, before the first humid week. Both months are easier to book than peak season. If your system is newer and still under warranty, check the manufacturer's terms. Many require documented annual maintenance to keep the warranty valid.

Between tune-ups
The best thing you can do yourself is change the filter. For standard one-inch filters, that is every one to three months. Keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves and snow, keep supply and return vents unblocked, and make sure the high-efficiency furnace vent pipes outside are not buried in snow. How often should I have my furnace serviced?
Once a year, ideally in early fall. Heat pumps benefit from service twice a year because they run in both seasons.
How much does a tune-up cost?
A furnace or AC tune-up in Licking County typically costs about $90 to $180. If we find a part that needs replacing, we quote it before doing any work.
How long does a tune-up take?
Most furnace or AC tune-ups take about an hour. Older or harder-to-reach equipment can take longer.
Can a tune-up really prevent breakdowns?
It will not prevent every failure, but most no-heat calls on the first cold night involve parts that were visibly worn weeks earlier. A tune-up is the chance to catch them.
Will skipping maintenance void my warranty?
It can. Many manufacturers require proof of regular professional maintenance for warranty claims. Keep your service records.
