Where a mini-split makes sense
A ductless mini-split is a small heat pump with an outdoor unit and one or more indoor heads mounted on the wall or ceiling. Each head heats and cools its own zone, connected to the outdoor unit by a small refrigerant line through a three-inch hole. No ductwork is needed.

Granville has a lot of older homes heated by boilers and cast-iron radiators. The heat is excellent, and the owners do not want to tear open plaster walls to add ductwork for air conditioning. Two or three mini-split heads placed carefully give them quiet cooling in summer and a second heat source in the shoulder seasons without touching the radiators.
Why they are efficient
Mini-splits lose almost nothing to ductwork, because there is none. Their inverter-driven compressors ramp up and down smoothly instead of switching fully on and off, which keeps rooms at a steady temperature. Cold-climate models keep heating well below zero, so in many rooms a mini-split can be the primary heat source, not just the air conditioning.

Planning a system
We start with how the space is used. A bedroom, a living room and a workshop each need different head placement and sizing. Oversizing a mini-split causes the same short cycling and clammy air as an oversized central system, so we size each zone with a room-by-room calculation. We plan the outdoor unit location to clear snow and drain defrost water, and route line sets as neatly as possible, inside walls where we can, or in a painted line-hide cover where we cannot.
Bonus rooms over garages are some of the most common problem rooms we see in Pataskala and Heath subdivisions. The room shares a ceiling with the attic and a floor with an unheated garage, and the builder ran one long duct to it. A single mini-split head fixes a problem that the main system never could.
Single-zone or multi-zone
A single-zone system pairs one outdoor unit with one indoor head and is the simplest and most efficient setup. Multi-zone systems connect two to five heads to one outdoor unit and work well when several rooms need help. For a whole house without ducts, we often recommend a combination. How much does a ductless mini-split cost?
A single-zone mini-split typically runs about $3,000 to $5,500 installed in Licking County. Multi-zone systems with two to four heads usually run $6,000 to $13,000.
Can a mini-split heat my room in winter?
Yes. Cold-climate mini-splits keep producing heat well below zero and are efficient enough to be the main heat source for many rooms.
Do mini-splits need much maintenance?
Clean the washable filters in each indoor head every month or two, keep the outdoor unit clear of snow and leaves, and have the system professionally cleaned about once a year.
Will I have to run ductwork?
No. A mini-split needs only a small hole in the wall for the refrigerant line, drain and wiring connecting the indoor head to the outdoor unit.
Can I use a mini-split in a garage or pole barn?
Yes, as long as the space is reasonably insulated. For uninsulated buildings, we will talk through realistic expectations before you spend money.
